 ACTIVITIES HELD TO SENSITIZE STUDENTS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF OZONE LAYER

  

  

St Cecilia’s Public School, Vikaspuri, New Delhi organized diverse activities for  school children to create awareness about the importance of ozone layer for life on earth and the steps required for its conservation. The designed sets of activities were in support of United Nations General Assembly resolution regarding celebration of 16th September as the ‘International Day for the preservation of Ozone layer’. All the activities spiraled around the main theme “Ozone and Climate: Restored by World United” supported by the UN declared slogan “Working towards reducing global warming HFC’s under the Montreal Protocol”.

‘Slogan Writing Activity’ on the topic ‘Save the Ozone layer’was conducted for all students of classes VI- A and VI-B. Students explored their creative potential and came up with interesting yet informative slogans to increase awareness amongst the masses for the urgent need to conserve the ozone layer.

‘Creative Essay writing’ on the topic ‘How can we make our atmosphere healthy?’ was organized for all students of classes VI-C and VI-D. Students utilized their analytical and reasoning skills to come up with productive solutions and effective measures that can be taken to make the earth’s atmosphere healthy in context to the survival of the diverse life forms on the blue planet.

‘Poster Making Activity’ on the topic ‘Ozone: A natural Umbrella’was held for classes VII –A and VII- B. The activity witnessed the students translating their theoretical knowledge about the importance of ozone layer into eye catching posters which conveyed the message in an impactful way.

‘Report Writing’ on the topic ‘Methods adopted by people for keeping their houses cool in olden times when air conditioners were not so common: Their relevance in the present times’was done by students of classes VII –C and VII-D. Students extensively researched on the topic from various literary and media sources and prepared a detailed report contrasting the various methods used by people for cooling over the century. Through this activity students could reflect upon the propagated necessity of the modern methods of cooling in the backdrop of larger environmental concerns.

‘Cartoon or Comic Strip Designing Activity’ on the topic ‘Ozone and Climate’ was conducted for all students of classes VIII-A and VIII-B. This activity witnessed students utilize humour as an effective tool to spread awareness about a scientific issue of concern in an effective way.

‘Project Making’ on the topic ‘Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and their impact on Global Warming’ was done by students of classes VIII-C and VIII-D. Students researched the internet, scientific journals and magazines to prepare a detailed exploratory project covering the significance and impact of the specified carbon compounds especially in context of depletion of ozone layer.

‘Power Point Presentation’ on the topic ‘Global Warming- Its causes and impacts’was organized for students of classes XI and XII. Students utilized different videos, animations, bar graphs and other statistical representations to spread awareness about the main causes and alarming effects of Global Warming.

The spiral of the above listed activities helped the students to explore, understand , analyse and reflect upon the  significance of ozone layer for life on the planet Earth. The diverse set of activities helped to spread awareness and make the students understand the urgent need of preservation of Ozone layer.
