Road Saftey Week

(15th December 2014 – 19th December 2014)

Day 1

Workshop on Road Safety by Delhi Traffic Police Department on 15th December

Road safety is an issue of prime concern to all. Be it a pedestrian, rickshaw puller or a vehicle driver, anyone can fall prey to mishaps on roads. The Global status report on road safety 2013 estimates that more than 2,31,000 people are killed in road traffic crashes in India every year which is more than the number of deaths caused because of any deadly disease. Eco-Club of St. Cecilia’s Public School, made an attempt to reduce the number of such unfortunate incidences by sensitizing students towards this global issue by celebrating ‘Road Safety Week’ from December 15 – December 19, 2014. The programme was initiated by Madam Vice Principal’s address to the students discussing the role of parents in preventing minor driving. It was followed by a workshop conducted by S.I. Mr. Vijay Yadav and A.S.I Mr. Bijender Singh from Delhi Traffic Police on December 15, 2014 in the school hall. The team interacted with the students raising the issues of rash – driving, drunk driving, road rage with special mention to minor driving. They also discussed immediate causes and traumatic effects of impulsive behavior of people on roads. The importance of obeying traffic rules while travelling on the roads was also discussed. Students were sensitized on the issue so as to make them a responsible road user. The aim of the workshop was to enhance respect for one’s life and that of others- and inculcate the sensitivity that each life matters, thereby inspiring students to act responsibly on the road and make Indian road the safest in the world.

Slogan writing competition was organised for Class IX and Class X. students participated enthusiastically and wrote wonderful slogans. Outstanding work of students was appreciated by Madam Principal.

Day 3

To observe the third day of the road safety week, the school organized a special assembly on   December 17, 2014 in the school play ground. The assembly commenced with the prayer and thought for the day and a speech on Do’s And Don’ts was also delivered. To make the students aware about the traffic rules, a skit was organized by the students of Class VI –Class VIII. It displayed the significance of wearing seat belts and helmet. It also reflected the harms of triple riding on two wheelers and discouraged students from driving till they attain the age of 18 yrs. It also signified the importance of carrying a license. The students enjoyed the performance and learnt the basic safety rules which must be followed on roads to have a safe journey.

Day 4

18th December 2014

There are many people who left their homes in the morning, promising their families to see them soon but never came back. The cruel roads have engulfed them.Road accidents are one of the major causes of deaths in the world. Princess Diana’s car crash and recent death of Union Minister Gopi Nath Munde in a road accident has proved that people all over the world are equally prone to road accidents.

Best-practice road safety strategies focus upon the prevention of serious injury and death crashes in spite of human fallibility. Adhering to the safety rules is the only key to prevent road accidents. Roads must not only be vehicle friendly but also user friendly. Following the norms for road engineering and taking safety measures for vehicle manufacturing along with awareness of road safety rules can only save precious lives from being lost on roads.

Marking the fourth day of the ‘Road Safety Week’ on December 18, 2014, students of classes  VI – X participated in power point presentation competition on the topic – Road Safety : DO’S and DON’T’S. The competition was held in two groups, group ‘A’ comprising of Classes VI – VIII and Group ‘B’ comprising of Class IX –X. Besides exhibiting their communicative and technological skills students also conveyed the message of plying safely on roads by following the norms and regulations. Efforts of the students were applauded by the audience. The event was judged for group ‘A’ by Ms. Sandhya Gupta and Ms. Priyanka Chauhan and for Group ‘B’ was judged by Ms. Prajjya Dutta and Ms. Priyanka Chauhan. Madam Vice Principal announced the results and also wished students a safe future.

Day 5

19th December 2014

“Mummy, please don’t end my life before it begins” – Never use mobile phone while driving. “Hug us at home, but belt us in the car! With these words in their hearts, young Cecilians began their day on 19th December, 2014 observing the fifth day of the ‘Road Safety Week’. Safety awareness should begin from childhood, as it imparts awareness to a grown up human. If this is done then it will become a habit. Moreover, kids are the ones who are most heard by their parents, thus providing road safety education at a younger age will not only save the future generations from the menace of road accidents but also encourage our present generation to obey the traffic rules.

A special assembly exhibition was arranged by the primary wing of the school to educate young Cecilians about the road safety rules so that they can become a responsible road user in future. Children from Class IV and V made their peers aware of the safety norms and took a pledge that they would make their parents adhere to these safety norms.
